Matisse used pattern as a compositional tool in both his ink drawings as well as his paintings. Students will look at projected images of Matisse’s paintings and ink drawings examining the function that pattern serves beyond simply visual sensation. The first day of the workshop will focus on drawing simple objects from observation. Students will experiment using pattern to manipulate composition and to alter pictorial space. On Day 2 students will make large finished ink drawings of objects (plants, vegetables, dishes etc.) integrating pattern as well as color to push the still life drawings into new dimensions.
